One Dollar Beach is a quiet, coral-fringed beach on the north coast about 38 km east-north-east of Dili, roughly a 45-minute drive, in the suco of Uma Caduac in Manatuto municipality (not in Dili itself). It is visited mainly for snorkelling and diving; facilities are limited, so bring what you need.

Why it’s called One Dollar Beach

The name dates from the early 2000s, when Timor-Leste was under UN administration: local people charged visitors US$1 to park, a fee often paid by UN staff. No current fee is listed by the official tourism site.

What to expect

  • Water: close to shore the seabed is sandy and the water is very clear. Further out, a fringing reef with tropical fish and sometimes sea turtles is good for snorkelling and diving.
  • Facilities: limited. There may be a few stalls selling simple grilled fish, but do not count on them: bring water, food, shade and your own snorkel gear.
  • Crowds: usually few people, especially on weekdays.

Getting there

Take the coast road east from Dili past Hera towards Manatuto. Access to the beach can be limited, so a driver who knows the turn-off helps. There is no public transport to the beach itself.

Safety

Ask locally about currents and conditions before you swim. Saltwater crocodiles live along parts of Timor-Leste’s coast, so check with local people before entering the water, and avoid swimming at dusk or near river mouths. Take your rubbish with you.
