Tasitolu (“three lakes” in Tetum) is a protected area about 8 km west of central Dili, with three shallow saline lakes, mangroves, savanna woodland and a stretch of coast. It is an Important Bird Area and a place of national memory: Pope John Paul II said Mass here in 1989, and Pope Francis celebrated Mass for more than 600,000 people here in 2024. Go early in the morning for birds and cooler air.
Nature and birdwatching
BirdLife International lists Tasitolu as an Important Bird Area. Its habitats include permanent saline lakes, mangrove, grassland, beach and Eucalyptus alba savanna woodland, and fifteen restricted-range bird species have been recorded, including the Near Threatened Timor sparrow. The wetlands have been designated a Wetland of National Significance.
Being so close to the capital, the site is under pressure from heavy use, cutting of mangroves and eucalyptus, rubbish dumping, and extraction of sand and rock. Stay on existing tracks and take your litter away.
History and national memory
- 12 October 1989: Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass on the open ground at Tasitolu during the Indonesian occupation; young Timorese used the occasion to unfurl pro-independence banners. A large statue of John Paul II now marks the site.
- 2002: the area was designated the Tasitolu Peace Park because of its cultural and historical importance, and it hosted celebrations for the restoration of independence on 20 May 2002.
- 2006: during that year’s political crisis, several hundred displaced people sheltered in a camp here.
- 10 September 2024: Pope Francis celebrated Mass at Tasitolu for more than 600,000 people, close to half of the country’s population.
Visiting
- Getting there: about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi west of central Dili, towards the airport and Tibar. Agree the fare first. See getting around.
- When to go: early morning or late afternoon for birds, light and cooler temperatures. Bring binoculars, water, a hat and sunscreen; there is little shade.
- Swimming: the lakes are not for swimming. On the coast, saltwater crocodiles have been seen on beaches near Dili, so ask locals before entering the sea.
- Safety: avoid the area during demonstrations or large gatherings.
