Where Timor-Leste is on the map

Timor is the largest and easternmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands, the chain that runs east from Bali through Lombok, Sumbawa and Flores. Timor-Leste takes up the eastern half of the island; the western half, West Timor, belongs to Indonesia and is part of East Nusa Tenggara province, with Kupang as its main city.

To find it on a world map, look north-west of Australia and east of Bali. The Savu Sea and the Wetar Strait lie to the north, the Timor Sea to the south. The interior is mountainous, rising to Mount Ramelau (2,963 m), and the capital Dili sits on the north coast facing Ataúro Island. For terrain and seasons, see geography and climate.

Neighbouring countries

Indonesia: the only land border

Timor-Leste shares a land border with Indonesia in two places: the main border between the two halves of the island, and the border that surrounds the Oé-Cusse enclave on every side except the sea. The main crossing for travellers is Batugade (Timor-Leste) to Mota’ain (Indonesia) on the north coast road between Dili and Atambua.

Australia: across the Timor Sea

Australia has no land border with Timor-Leste. It lies to the south and south-east across the Timor Sea, and Darwin is the nearest Australian city, with the shortest international flight to Dili. See Timor-Leste in the region for relations with both neighbours.

Why is Timor-Leste split in two?

Oé-Cusse is separated from the rest of the country because of how Portugal and the Netherlands divided the island of Timor in the colonial era. Today’s international border follows that colonial line.

  • 1859, Treaty of Lisbon: Portugal and the Netherlands set a frontier across the middle of the island. It left a Dutch enclave, Maucatar, inside Portuguese territory and a Portuguese enclave, “Oikoussi” (Oé-Cusse) with Ambeno, inside Dutch territory in the west.
  • 1893, Lisbon convention: both governments agreed to fix the boundary more precisely and to make the enclaves disappear.
  • 1904, Hague convention (1 October 1904): Portugal received Maucatar and the Netherlands received Noimuti, but Oé-Cusse-Ambeno stayed Portuguese.
  • 1914, arbitral award: surveyors could not agree on the eastern limit of Oé-Cusse-Ambeno, so the dispute went to the Permanent Court of Arbitration. The arbitrator, Charles Lardy, ruled on 25 June 1914 and fixed that section of the border.

Oé-Cusse matters historically: Lifau, on its coast, was the first Portuguese settlement on Timor and the colonial capital until it moved to Dili in 1769. When Portuguese Timor became Timor-Leste, Oé-Cusse came with it, which is why the country has an enclave inside Indonesia.

Southeast Asia, ASEAN and Indonesia

Timor-Leste is in Asia, not Oceania. The United Nations statistical classification (M49) lists it in South-eastern Asia, alongside Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and the other ASEAN countries. On 26 October 2025 it became ASEAN’s 11th member at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

It is not part of Indonesia. Portugal ruled the territory until 1975. FRETILIN proclaimed independence on 28 November 1975, and Indonesia invaded on 7 December 1975 and occupied it until 1999. In a UN-organised referendum on 30 August 1999, Timorese people voted for independence; after a period of UN administration, independence was restored on 20 May 2002. How far is it from Darwin, Bali and Kupang?

No official source publishes straight-line distances, so here are the flight times listed by Timor-Leste’s official tourism site (October 2026):

FromApproximate flight time to Dili
Darwin, Australia1h 30m
Bali (Denpasar), Indonesia2h
Singapore4h

From Kupang, the capital of Indonesian West Timor, most travellers go overland via Atambua and the Batugade (Mota’ain) border post. Bus companies do not publish official timetables, so check journey times with the operator.

How to get there

Most visitors fly into Dili from Bali, Darwin, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore; there are no long-haul flights, so from Europe, the Americas or most of Asia you connect in one of those hubs. The other practical route is overland from West Timor. Full routes, airlines and border rules are in how to get to Timor-Leste, and entry rules by nationality are in visa and immigration.

Frequently asked questions

Which country is Dili the capital of?

Dili is the capital of Timor-Leste (East Timor). It lies on the north coast of the island of Timor, facing Ataúro Island.

Is East Timor the same country as Timor-Leste?

Yes. Timor-Leste is the official name and East Timor is the English name. “Leste” is Portuguese for “east”.

Is Timor-Leste the same as Brunei?

No. Brunei is a different country, on the island of Borneo, far to the north-west. Both are in Southeast Asia and both are ASEAN members, which is where the confusion comes from.

Why does Timor-Leste have two parts?

Because of the colonial division of Timor island. Oé-Cusse was a Portuguese enclave inside Dutch territory, confirmed by the 1859 Treaty of Lisbon, the 1904 convention and a 1914 arbitral award. Dutch West Timor later became part of Indonesia, while Portuguese Timor, including Oé-Cusse, became Timor-Leste.

Is Timor-Leste part of Indonesia?

No. Indonesia occupied the territory from 1975 to 1999, but Timor-Leste voted for independence in 1999 and has been a fully independent country since 20 May 2002. It joined the United Nations in 2002 and ASEAN in 2025.

Where is Ataúro Island?

About 25 km north of Dili, across the Wetar Strait. A ferry takes about 2¼–3 hours. See Atauro Island.

Where is Jaco Island?

Off the far eastern tip of Timor, in Lautém municipality near Tutuala. It is a long day’s drive from Dili, then a short boat ride from Valu Beach. See Jaco Island.
