1. Atauro Island
What it is: a mountainous island about 25 km north of Dili with clear water, village walks and some of the richest reefs recorded anywhere. See the Atauro Island guide.
How to get there: the APORTIL ferry leaves Dili at 8:00am and returns from Beloi at 3:00pm. The Berlin Nakroma (US$4, about 2h15) sails Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from Porto Dili; the Success (US$5, about 3h) sails Tuesday and Friday from Kolmera. There is no Monday ferry, so a same-day return is only possible Tuesday to Sunday. Tickets are cash only, sold at the port on the day.
How long you get: roughly four to five hours on the island, enough for snorkelling and a walk around Beloi. To dive, hike Mount Manucoco or visit Vila, stay at least one night.
Faster options: Beloi Beach Hotel’s water taxi (US$70 per adult, US$35 per child, one way; book ahead and confirm the return time) or an MAF flight from Dili airport (ask MAF for fares and whether a same-day return is possible).
Bring: US dollars in small notes, water, snacks, sun protection and a dry bag. Full timetable: Dili to Atauro ferry guide.
2. Cristo Rei and Back Beach
What it is: the 27 m Christ statue on Cape Fatucama, reached by a path with the 14 Stations of the Cross (about 30 minutes up), and two beaches either side of the headland. Back Beach (Dolok Oan) is the better one for swimming; the front beach has a coral-covered shore.
How to get there: about 7 km east of central Dili, around 15 minutes by taxi or microlet. A microlet costs US$0.25; taxis are not metered, so agree the fare first.
Bring: water, a hat, reef shoes and sunscreen; there is little shade. Go early morning or late afternoon. See Cristo Rei and best beaches.
3. Dare Memorial and the hills
What it is: the Dare Memorial Museum and Café, in the hills above Dili, commemorates the 1942–43 Second World War campaign and the Timorese who helped Australian commandos. The displays are worn, but the views over Dili and the café make the trip worthwhile. The Dare Fatunaba memorial is nearby.
How to get there: by car or taxi up the steep, winding road to Dare. No official travel time is published; check locally.
Opening hours: the official listing gives daily from 9am to 9pm (10pm on Sundays), but hours may be shorter: call +670 7579 0406. Details in our Dare listing and the history in Timor-Leste in World War II.
Bring: a light layer and cash for the café.
4. Tasitolu
What it is: a protected area of three shallow salt lakes, mangroves and coast, listed by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area. It is also where Pope John Paul II said Mass in 1989 and Pope Francis in 2024.
How to get there: about 8 km west of central Dili, 15 to 20 minutes by taxi towards the airport and Tibar.
Bring: binoculars, water, a hat and sunscreen. Go early for birds. The lakes are not for swimming, and you should avoid the area during demonstrations or large gatherings. Read Tasitolu: lakes, birdwatching and history.
5. Liquiçá and Maubara Fort
What it is: a coast road west of Dili with history and beaches. Maubara Fort was built by the Dutch after Maubara allied with them in 1755 and was handed to Portugal in 1861; the official tourism site says it now has a small café and souvenir shop. The ruined 19th-century Ai Pelo prison is a roadside stop on the same road.
How to get there: 30–60 km west of Dili along the coast road (official tourism site); Maubara is about an hour’s drive. Hire a car with a driver or take a microlet to Liquiçá town.
Swimming: the beach by the fort is stony; a sandier stretch lies about 1.5 km towards Dili. Ask locals about conditions first.
Bring: swimwear, water and cash for small shops. See Liquiçá and Portuguese heritage.
6. Aileu and Berloi Waterfall
What it is: a cool, hilly municipality of coffee farms and rice fields, with monuments in Aileu town and Berloi Waterfall beside the Dili–Aileu road.
How to get there: Aileu is 47 km southwest of Dili (official tourism site) on a winding mountain road; allow at least an hour each way, more in the wet season or with roadworks. A private car with a driver is the easiest option.
Bring: a light jacket, walking shoes and sun protection. The waterfall flows best in the wet season. See Aileu; to continue into the highlands, read Maubisse.
7. East coast to Manatuto
What it is: the coast road east towards Baucau, with Hera Beach (about 15 km east of Dili), One Dollar Beach for snorkelling, and in Manatuto municipality the pink twin-towered Laleia church and Manatuto town’s Sunday market and terracotta pottery kilns (official tourism site).
How to get there: by car along the Baucau road. No official travel time to Manatuto is published, so check locally. Access to One Dollar Beach can be limited; a driver who knows the turn-off helps.
Bring: snorkel gear, water and food; facilities are limited. See Manatuto and One Dollar Beach.
8. Diving and snorkelling day trips
What it is: a fringing reef runs along the north coast, so many sites near Dili are shore entries, such as Cristo Rei, Tasitolu and Dili Rock (just under 10 km west). Dili operators also run boat trips to Atauro.
Cost (Dive Timor Lorosae, as of October 2026): shore dive in Dili from US$50; two boat dives off Dili US$120; two boat dives at Atauro from Dili US$210 (minimum 5 divers). A high-season surcharge applies from mid-September to November. See trip cost.
Bring: your certification card, reef shoes for long walks over coral at low tide, and cash or ask whether cards are accepted. Site details: diving in and around Dili.
Planning your day trip
- Transport: car hire with a driver is the usual way to go beyond Dili, but operators do not publish standard day rates; ask for a written quote that says whether fuel and the driver’s meals are included. Manny Timor Tours lists half-day and full-day tours at US$75 per person (minimum 3), and Island Explorer Tours at Timor Plaza lists Dili city tours and a Baucau day tour. See getting around and tour operators.
- Cash: bring US dollars in small notes; ATMs are in Dili. See money and currency.
- Sea safety: saltwater crocodiles have been seen on beaches near Dili, currents can be strong and there are almost no lifeguards. Ask locals before every swim. See is Timor-Leste safe?.
- Season: the dry season, roughly May to November, brings calmer seas and better roads. See weather and seasons.
- Timing: start early and plan to be back in Dili before dark.
